First Time in China? The Perfect 10-Day Itinerary
If this is your first trip to China, the classic "Golden Triangle" route — Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai — offers the perfect introduction to the country's imperial history, ancient wonders, and modern dynamism. Here is a well-paced 10-day plan.
Days 1-4: Beijing — Imperial Splendor
Start with the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square on day one. On day two, visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu (less crowded, with cable car access) and the Ming Tombs. Day three: Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, and a rickshaw ride through the hutongs. Day four allows a flexible day for 798 Art District or the Olympic Park.
Days 5-6: Xi'an — The Terracotta Army
Take the morning high-speed train (about 4.5 hours). Visit the Terracotta Army on day five, and Xi'an City Wall, the Muslim Quarter, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda on day six. Don't miss the local biangbiang noodles and lamb paomo.
Days 7-9: Shanghai — Modern Metropolis
High-speed train to Shanghai (about 6 hours). Explore the Bund, Nanjing Road, and Yu Garden. Day eight: French Concession walking tour and Shanghai Museum. Day nine: Zhujiajiao water town for a half-day escape, or the Shanghai Tower for skyline views.
Day 10: Departure
Fly out from Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao, or return to Beijing for international flights. Book domestic trains in advance — they sell out during holidays.
Budget Snapshot
A comfortable 10-day trip (mid-range hotels, private car + guide for key days, daily meals) typically runs $1,800-2,600 per person excluding international flights. High-speed train Beijing-Xi'an is about ¥500-600 in second class; Xi'an-Shanghai about ¥670.
