Mutianyu vs Badaling: Which Great Wall Section to Visit
Comparing Mutianyu and Badaling Great Wall sections: crowds, cable cars, hiking, accessibility, photo spots. Choose the best Great Wall experience for your trip.
Mutianyu vs Badaling: Which Great Wall Section to Visit?
Both Mutianyu and Badaling are fully restored, accessible sections of the Great Wall and the two most popular choices for first-time visitors from Beijing. But they offer very different experiences. Here's how to choose.
Badaling: The Classic, Crowded Icon
Badaling is the most famous and most visited section — it's where most VIPs and state guests are taken. Pros: smooth, wide restored walls, cable car, and the museum. Cons: extremely crowded even on weekdays; it's effectively a tourist conveyor belt. Accessibility is the best of all sections, with ramps and a cable car from the base.
Mutianyu: The Scenic, Quieter Alternative
Mutianyu, about 90 minutes from central Beijing, is surrounded by forested hills and offers the most beautiful scenery among restored sections. It has two cable cars plus a chairlift and the famous toboggan ride down. Crowds are far lighter than Badaling, and the wall here features more watchtowers per kilometer, giving it a more authentic feel.
Head-to-Head Comparison
- Crowds: Badaling is packed; Mutianyu is moderate (still busy midday in peak season).
- Scenery: Mutianyu wins with forested mountains; Badaling's hills are more barren.
- Access: Both have cable cars; Mutianyu adds chairlift + toboggan.
- Drive time: Badaling ~70 min via expressway; Mutianyu ~90 min.
- History: Badaling hosted Mao Zedong's 1954 visit and has the Great Wall Museum.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Mutianyu for the best combination of scenery, smaller crowds, and family fun (the toboggan is a hit with kids). Choose Badaling if you want the "official" iconic experience, the museum, or maximum accessibility. Our private tours can also recommend the wilder Jinshanling and Jiankou sections for experienced hikers who want fewer tourists and untouched walls.
Whichever you pick, go early — gates open around 7:30am and the wall is emptiest before 10am. A private car with an English-speaking driver makes the trip far more comfortable than public buses.
